Guide last updated: April 2008 for patch 2.4
Review last updated: 2008-04-09
Spugnort’s PvP Guide promises to be "The most comprehensive player versus player guide available to the World of Warcraft Community." That’s a bold statement but, after reading it, I have to agree.
The meat of the guide is the class vs. class sections where you will learn how your class can slay any other. It’s also educational to read how all other classes can kill you. This section will give you a deep understanding of how all other classes approach PvP, probably for the first time in your life.
The tactics are really specific; you’ll learn exactly which abilities to use, in the right order, what your enemy can do to counter your moves and, best of all, how you can counter his or her countermeasures! (That will usually catch all but the best players off guard)
The "General PvP Section" was a rewarding read all by itself. It will tell you which stats to focus on, how to maximize honor gain, pointers on gear selection broken down by every class, and "tricks of the trade" which you are unlikely to read about anywhere else (topics include: using keybindings, using macros, mouse sensitivity, and the right way to use cooldown abilities).
There’s another section on World PvP objectives covering Halaa, Zangarmarsh, Terokkar Forest and Hellfire Peninsula. Not the most exciting chapter since world PvP is pretty dead in WoW. Battlegrounds strategies and tips are explained in a separate chapter, which is somewhat outdated but still okay.
Spugnort’s PvP guide is written from a level 70 perspective, and every class is given at least two PvP talent builds (except warrior which is really all about one spec), on which the various tactics are based. The specs are explained so you’ll know your strengths and weaknesses.
The guide was recently greatly expanded with the long-awaited arena strategies! Also, they added enchants and gems to some classes and other nice bonuses. You will now learn what other classes your class should team up with and specific gameplay tactics for winning in 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5.
As if that wasn’t enough, they added two completely new chapters entitled: "Arena Strategies and Positioning" and "Preparing for PvP Combat".
Arena Stragies and Positioning is a long chapter explaining how to position your team, your healers, your dps and your CC in all three arenas (complete with pics), where to drink etc. Good stuff. The it goes on to recommend different teams for all brackets, such as "burst DPS", "healer heavy", "mana drain" and "melee heavy". That way you’ll easily find a setup that fits your class and playstyle and learn how to play it.
"Preparing for PvP Combat" might be one of the most rewarding chapters if you’re new to PvP. In it, you’ll learn all about PvP addons, keybindings, resilience and stamina (and how to compare pieces of gear), how to gear up for arenas and more.
As for accuracy of the content, the things I read were pretty much correct and up-to-date with patch 2.4.
In my opinion this guide deserves a strong 8/10. Certainly no other guide comes close. Click here for more information.
