Penn’s Ultimate Professions Guide is a profession leveling guide. Its purpose is to help you level up any profession (except the rogue-specific lockpicking skill) from 1 to 375. As such, it will not teach you everything about professions, but it will give you a basic overview of which professions to choose based on your class and what you want to accomplish.

The main benefit of this guide is the maps with locations to materials… The guide doesn’t only tell you what to craft to up your skill, but it tells you where to find the materials for those items. This could be fish, ore, herbs, beasts for skinning and such.

The idea behind this guide seems to be that you shouldn’t have to look things up on database sites such as wowhead.com or thottbot.com. But the guide falls short on some points:

  • Sometimes you should create an item which is learnt from a vendor bought recipe, but there are no links to the recipes so you’ll have to look them up anyway on thottbot.com etc.
  • In a few places the links to trainers are missing so you’ll be searching for them on database sites anyway.
  • Sometimes it’s better to not collect the materials yourself but buy them from the auction house instead. For example, the guide advises you to farm for some rare drops. The problem is they’re so rare that you can’t reliable farm them! You’ll be spending hours and hours farming for those items, when you could spend some gold on the auction house instead. I mean, the point of a profession leveling guide is to level your profs faster and easier, right? Not harder and slower.
  • Some crafted items are learnt from world drop recipes, in other words quite rare recipes that you can’t reliably farm but have to purchase off the auction house. If there are none on your server, tough luck I guess.
  • The guide doesn’t tell you where to buy certain items, so you’ll have to look it up on thottbot or wowhead.
  • Some materials do not have maps, so you’ll have to look those up anyway.

In addition to the above, the guide didn’t feel clear enough. I didn’t try it, though, so it might be easier once you start following it.

But with all these points taken together you’ll be looking up many things on database sites, despite having the guide. Therefore, I will give you another option to consider. Valkor’s Gold Making Guide comes with profession skill-up guides for most professions as a bonus. Yes, you’ll have to look up more things with Valkor’s professions guide, but you’ll be getting the great gold guide as well, which I think is a far better value right now.
