Killer Guides' Shaman Guide

Killer Guides’ Shaman Guide
- 7/10

Guide last updated: May 2009 for WotLK patch 3.1
Review last updated: June 21, 2009
Guide suitable for: Beginner - intermediate players

The Shaman guide by Killer Guides’ is a 133 page ebook intended to take all the way from creating your shaman to becoming a powerful level 80 character, regardless of play style.

As you may already know, the shaman is a hybrid, and depending upon your choices of gear and talents you can become similar to either a mage (elemental shaman), warrior (enhancement shaman) or a priest (restoration shaman).

I think the guide does a good job of separating these builds so you get an understanding of which stats, gear and talents to focus on depending on what you want to accomplish. The guide contains many discussions on topics such as character creation, stats to focus on, gear, macros, leveling paths for both horde & alliance, addons, talents, professions, shaman quests and gold making. A lot of the pages are dedicated to talking about your spells & abilities and your talents.

Don’t expect too much from the gold and pvp section; they are pretty basic. On the other hand, the leveling guide will show you appropriate zones to visit and point you to important quests, so you don’t miss any class quests and such (I’ve done that more than once).

As far as accuracy is concerned, I found almost everything in the guide to be up to date with the latest patch (right now). That is important so you will be able to trust the tips. But don’t worry too much if another patch comes out and tweaks the shaman somewhat; those changes almost always only affect level 80’s and don’t change anything fundamental about the class, so if you’re a beginner-intermediate shaman you can still use all the tips in the guide.

Even though this guide is geared more towards those still learning and leveling their shaman, it does show you how to make best use of enchants, gems and glyphs at level 80.

If I had to complain…

If there was something that could have been better about this guide it would be clearer advice in some places. For example, the discussion on horde races weighs all the pros and cons of each race against each other, but a specific recommendation as to which race to go with is never made.

The gameplay strategies for solo play could also have been clearer, i.e. how to approach a one mob encounter, two mob encounter, three mob encounter and so on.

The value of having a 16 page list of instances in a shaman guide can also be debated; it doesn’t hurt, but something else might have been more useful.

Conclusion

I think if you return to the guide to look up things as you progress it will be of great help for you in making the shaman you want to play. You may need more than one reading to absorb all the info here. If you’re already level 80, or close to it, you probably know most of the stuff already.
