Guide last updated: April 2008 for patch 2.4
Review last updated: 2008-04-10
If you’re looking for a guide to mastering the druid, this one is the best I’ve seen.
Whether you’re completely new to the druid class, or already started leveling your druid, this guide will teach you what you need to know to enhance your experience with this versatile class.
Since a druid can be like a healer, rogue (cat form), warrior (bear form) or mage (moonkin form) it’s not easy to write a guide that covers everything. Nevertheless, I think the author has done a good job in this 153 page guide.
You’ll be learning a lot about talents and talent builds (though the purposes of the different talent builds could have been better explained), and there is a discussion of most druid abilities so you know what to use when.
The gear section could have been better. It’s good enough for levels 1-60 but then it goes on to list a lot of gear from the old 40 man instances (MC, BWL, Naxx) which is hardly relevant to most druids nowadays since you’ll be getting better gear in Outlands.
The best part about this guide is the combat strategies. If you want to be a skilled druid you have to learn how to solo mobs, how to take on groups, how to heal and how to tank. That’s exactly what you’ll learn in those pages. The author is quite specific when it comes to what abilities to use and the order in which to use them, so you’ll have confidence in all your roles.
The PvP chapter contains bulleted lists of tips to keep in mind when fighting the various classes. PvP requires a lot of practice to master, but these hints will certainly help.
Another cool part was the raid preparation chapter that tells you what to aim for in terms of gear and potions and such before you enter various lvl 70+ raid instances.
There was also a chapter on making gold included in the guide, and one on leveling. As you can expect, trying to squeeze in a leveling and gold guide in a class guide doesn’t allow for too specific strategies. Nevertheless, you’ll get some good hints that will help you level up and make gold a bit faster.
Finally, a nice touch was the section on addons and macros. While not essential to most new druids, it’s a great reference to have when you feel you want to take your gameplay to the next level.
Overall I feel that the parts of this guide that were druid specific (i.e. talents, abilities, gameplay strategies) were the strongest, which is good since those are the most important. The further you get from druid stuff, i.e. leveling, gold making, professions… the guide isn’t quite as strong. I give this a strong 8/10 rating.
