Guide last updated: March 2009 for Wrath of the Lich King
Review last updated: April 12, 2009
Guide suitable for: Those who want to level their primary professions and have a focus on
PvP
Killer Guides’ Profession Guide is, in my opinion, another decent but incomplete profession guide. About
half the guide is dedicated to skilling up most professions to 450 as well as choosing the right professions for
your class (except for Death Knights). The second half of the guide is mostly about making gold (pretty shallow
tips though) and enhancing PvP with professions.
The latter part ends up consisting of long lists of items you can craft with cooking, alchemy, engineering and
enchanting. Not terribly useful. The gold making chapter isn’t really focused on using professions for gold, but
other activities instead.
In the WotLK update some things were added, like discussions on choosing specializations for those professions
that offer them; the addition of Inscription, and engineering stuff for level 80 PvP. The guide is now about 120
pages.
One good thing is the resources section. There are links to cool websites that will help you leveling and
understanding your professions better. I learnt about a great new website that I will use going forward.
If I had to complain…
- While there are leveling guides for most professions, there’s nothing on cooking, fishing, first aid, or
skinning, and the mining guide is "minimalistic".
- I haven’t tried the leveling guides, but they look good. Except that some contain rare drop recipes, which
means you have to be lucky and find the recipes from a mob or on the auction house. Not ideal when you’re in a
hurry.
- The recommendation for your banker or "mule" to take mining and enchanting for the purpose of disenchanting
items and smelting ore is dubious, since you’ll then have to level your banker too, which defeats the purpose
or a banker, in my opinion.
- The WotLK update didn’t bring everything up to date. More than a few things are still only updated for
level Burning Crusade.
Anyway, there are many good things too. I just feel that it could use some improvement.
Conclusion
The best part is the skill-up paths for all primary professions. Though not perfect, they seem quite
helpful.
I think this guide is too pricey on its own to warrant a purchase. However, if Killer Guides have other WoW
guides you’re interested in then you might consider their entire WoW guide package for which would include this guide and all
the others, in which case I would definitely give this one a read.
