Killer Guides’ Engineering & Mining Guide is now updated for the Burning Crusade, and since I wanted engineering on one of my level 70s I decided to put this guide to the test.
First, though, let me tell you some facts about this guide: It is a 71 page long ebook detailing how to level up and profit from mining and engineering. It also talks about many of the cool gadgets you can craft and their uses.
When I tested this guide I had never skilled up engineering before, but I had skilled up mining. Since I had a lot of gold I decided to "powerlevel" my engineering by buying the mats from the auction house and just craft what the guide said.
Right from the start and all the way to skill 375 I found the guide very accurate. It tells you exactly what to buy, what to craft, the quantity and whether you should save it for later, auction it or vendor it. You don’t need any rare recipes, everything you craft can be learnt from a trainer or purchased from a vendor (or farmed very easily). So that’s a big plus over other profession guides I’ve seen.
The mining part of the guide is good as well. There are links to maps that show you the best locations for various ore you need to mine to get your skill up, and the author recommends some addons that will show you the locations of ore on the world map as well (gatherer addon). I must say there ARE faster ways to level your mining with the use of smelting as well. The author doesn’t address that, though.
A large part of the guide talks about the pros and cons of various craftables and there is a section that details "schematics with gold making potential". Engineering isn’t the best profession for gold, but there are things you can craft and sell to create an extra income stream. I’m using some of them right now myself and I wouldn’t have thought of them without this guide.
The only downside to this guide is the length. I think there could have been some more mining routes and some more content on choosing goblin or gnomish engineering for example.
Nevertheless, this guide has proven to be a great help in getting my engineering (and mining) skill to 375. By the way, in case you’re wondering, it cost me about 2000g to skill up my engineering with mats from the auction house, much of which can be made back by selling the creations you craft. So if you want these professions I certainly recommend this guide.
