Guide last updated: June 2008 for patch 2.4
Review last updated: May 29, 2008
Guide suitable for: Beginner - intermediate players
How would you like to now the best strategies for The Burning Crusade, from veterans who played it for months
before release?
That’s what this guide is about. Giving you insider information as to exactly what to expect and do in The
Burning Crusade, and give you "one-up" on even those WoW gamers who have played since release.
Let me first say that no guide could be a "complete guide to TBC". That would require thousands of pages.
You can read all about this guide here, but here’s what I got out of it:
- A solid understanding of the basics: which factions you can gain reputation with, how
world PvP works in TBC (some unique twists), all about flying mounts, overview of news to professions (some
very cool stuff), infrastructure (mailbox, bank, FP etc.) of towns, what’s new with the Draenei and Blood Elves
(could’ve been a little more info here on racial traits and mounts).
- A comprehensive grinding guide. Several tables will show you which zones to go to for mobs
of level 58-70+, and what type of mobs there are, and special drops to look out for.
- A 60-70 leveling guide. Let me tell you, I did NOT expect too much of this one
beforehand, since most leveling guides typically cover each level with one or two paragraphs, and are very
general. But this one was a breath of fresh air. Turns out, it’s over 90 pages long and dedicated totally to
questing, which is both much faster and more fun than grinding. The quests have been linked to
Wowhead.com and a lot of coordinates have been added that will save you a lot of time. There are no maps and
it’s not as good as a pure leveling guide, but a great addition regardless.
There is one horde guide, and one alliance guide. They are both equally detailed.
This leveling guide looks very good, and if you’re level 60 it may not appeal to you to get a 1-70 leveling
guide, especially so if you’ve got both horde and alliance characters. But this Burning Crusade guide thoroughly
covers 60-70. I think it can cut your leveling speed in half like it claims.
- PvP guide. This will give you a good understanding of the new battlegrounds, arenas and
world PvP, although it won’t exactly foster any PvP skills. It’s more "about PvP", than "how to".
- The gold guide was quite thin, to be honest. Only a few pages. There are nuggets of wisdom
in there, but I feel they could’ve been expanded upon. It’s a start nevertheless.
- Reputations. How to raise them, and some info on what the rewards are.
- Outland spells and skills. Pretty much the info that can be found on Blizzard’s website
already, with one major difference. The author has commented on many of the skills available to each class.
While something may look good/bad on paper, it’s another thing how it works in-game.
- Walkthroughs for all the 5 man instances. This was added in May 2008 and totalt 57 pages
dedicated to explaining the ins and outs of the various instances. Even the new Magister’s Terrace is covered.
You’ll find boss straegies, tips for heroics and lots of additional advice. Expect a few pages on each
instance. I’ve done all the instance in Outlands and I like reading up on them the first few times so I welcome
this section of the guide. I miss a list of quests to do inside each instance though.
I feel the information in this guide can be trusted thanks to the latest update for the 2.4 patch and
the author’s long-standing membership of the reputable guild "The Syndicate". He has written several guides
before, including the highly rated engineering and warlock guides. Things can always change in TBC, of
course, but this guide has already been updated a couple of times after release, so hopefully it will be kept
up to date (and updates are free).
Overall I say it’s a good guide, which is a bit lacking in its presentation. There could’ve been more links and
such. The main benefits are the 60-70 leveling guide and the instance walkthroughs.
