How to change your character name
Wednesday,February 14th, 2007
I had my name changed on my hunter from "Idkfa" to "Frozenangel" today.
Basically I got sick of hearing almost daily how I was "definitely" a botter, even though a few people cheered on me as they recognized the old Doom cheatcode.
Well, it was a crap name to begin with.
So I did the right thing. I reported myself to a GM saying that since my name violated Blizzard’s naming policy (no gibberish names) and that it made me the victim of verbal harassment, I wanted to change it. Indeed it violated their policy, they said, and let me change it. Not without putting a warning on my account though, which I tried to talk myself out of.
My defense went like this: "Since I have talked to GMs before (about other issues) they were already aware of my name being in violation of your policies, but they never had anything to say about it, so why warn me now?"
I don’t think he understood my point, but I was happy just to get the name changed. And, besides, I deserved that warning.
Now, here’s how you too may be able to change your character name…
Few people know how detailed and restrictive Blizzard’s naming policy really is and, therefore, there may be a chance that you’re violating it without knowing it! Now don’t worry, because they seldom or never do anything about it unless it’s reported to them.
Anyway, take a look at this document. If your name is in violation of their policy, and you want to change it, just do what I did and report yourself to a GM. But be prepared to have a warning put on your account.
There are other, exploitative, ways of changing your name. The one I know about involves deleting (yes, deleting) your character, so for obvious reasons that’s not something I recommend or would try.
